What to Expect in an EMDR Session

EMDR is not a traditional "talk therapy." Instead, it is a structured approach that utilizes your brain’s natural ability to heal itself. In our 80-minute sessions, we work together to transform how painful memories are stored in your mind and body.

1. Connection and Grounding

Every session begins with a supportive check-in to assess what is current in your life, your progress and separate matters. Because I believe in holistic healing, prayer and spiritual guidance are always available before, during, or after our work upon your request, providing a spiritual anchor for the clinical process.

2. Identifying the Focus

When you feel ready, we identify a specific "target" - this could be a distressing memory, a negative belief about yourself, or a recurring physical sensation. We don't need to dwell on every detail; we simply bring the "target" to mind to begin the reprocessing.

3. Bilateral Stimulation (BLS)

Using specialized software, I will guide you through sets of Bilateral Stimulation. This usually involves following a moving icon on your screen with your eyes, though other forms of rhythmic left-right stimulation can be used.

This side-to-side movement mimics the natural processing that occurs during REM sleep. It allows the "logical" part of your brain to communicate with the "emotional" part, helping the brain move a memory from a place of active distress to a place of peaceful resolution.

4. Processing and Integration

During these sets, you may notice new thoughts, feelings, or body sensations arising. This is your brain’s way of "digesting" the experience. We continue this process until the memory no longer feels "charged" or upsetting.

5. Closing with Balance

We conclude every session with grounding techniques or somatic exercises. These tools ensure that as you transition back into your day, you feel regulated, balanced, and safe in your body.

Healing and Growth

While every journey is unique, many clients experience significant relief in just a few sessions. As the brain integrates these past experiences, you may find a renewed sense of peace, resilience, and clarity in your daily life.

Frequently asked questions:

  • Yes, EMDR is for Christians. As a devoted Christian who upholds Biblical principles and shuns new-age practices, Faren has done her research, used EMDR in her own life, and wholeheartedly recommends it as a practical, time-efficient, therapeutic intervention that is best conducted for Christian clients in God’s presence and with His Spirit’s guidance.

Faren likens the process of EMDR to embarking on a transformative adventure, climbing mountains, traversing deserts, and exploring oceans, where new, uplifting experiences help distance you from past pain. Much like reaching a mountaintop after a challenging hike and beholding a vast, clear horizon, the gentle eye movements in EMDR allow you to gain perspective, reconnect with the present, and embrace healing. It’s not a substitute for prayer or your personal relationship with God, but a structured, supportive tool that works hand in hand with your faith, helping you let go of your struggles and step into a renewed future.

  • Before your session, it's important to consider your device choice. While bi-lateral audio can enhance EMDR, it's not essential for its effectiveness, which primarily relies on eye movements. Similar to tapping, bi-lateral audio serves as an additional stimulus that can aid the process.

If you opt for bi-lateral audio, you'll need wired headphones to experience the full effect. This setup typically works best with laptops or desktops. Some newer phones may support the bi-lateral audio with wired headphones, however, many modern devices no longer offer this option.

Alternatively, you can choose to have silence or listen to nature-based or instrumental background music during your EMDR session (included in the software). Tapping is also optional and can be done on various surfaces like knees, desks, shoulders, or the ground.

For those preferring to use the speakers of their laptop or cellphone for bi-lateral audio, newer devices (less than 5 years old) may support this functionality, but it's not guaranteed.

  • While there are many differences and similarities to discuss, Faren’s main perspective is that EMDR is simply quicker and more targeted to trauma and pain, and is one single intervention, whereas psychotherapy often utilizes many interventions. EMDR is an effective tool or intervention that intelligently helps people who are long-ready to get to closure. It is great for people who are serious about feeling different, letting go, and who have already tried to do so in some ways, but are still struggling.
